Riding holidays that makes lifetime memories

Stables with generations of hard earned experience have animals well suited to their venues. Skill levels from novices to experts can be accommodated. No matter the level of experience on back, the unrivaled destinations and adventures are sure to make an impression.

One hundred forty seven kilometers from Airport “L. Da Vinci” Roma, is the Saturnia region of Italy. Multiple outfitters with all levels of riders covered can kit your group for a mounted tour of Tuscany.  The riding is easy and hot mineral springs provide soothing baths. Especially nice for occasional riders. The countryside is captivating in a charming easy going way.

More dramatic scenery is found on the Andalucian coast of Spain. Flying to Jerez, Gibraltar, or Malaga puts your group within coach range of picturesque rides in the sand or the coastal pines. Outfitters can arrange a variety of group outings from rustic camps to friendly villages. Three star hotels and Bed and Breakfasts with self catering are also found in this region.

Ireland has many equestrian holidays to choose from. Old established trails through the countryside provide challenging tours and reward with unrivaled scenery. In Addition to the Donegal and Silgo trails, seaside riding is popular. The Airport at Silgo is convenient to a number of back holiday locations.

The Black mountains and National Park trails afford some great riding in Wales. The coal mining region has a unique flavor. Hospitality is good and local foods are gaining import with foodies, making this destination a “hip” place to visit. The longstanding culture of welsh horsemanship ensures that capable mounts and outfits will be on hand.

France has an abundance of beautiful countryside. The Tarn Valley is a jewel in the crown of equestrian holiday destinations. Surrounded by gorgeous mountains and graced with a scenic river the valley combines the allure of nature with some of the best sightseeing towns on the continent. Ranchers in the area are particular about supplying well cared for animals and matching the mount to the rider. The simple hearty food of this region makes an excellent repast after a day on the trail.

From the Madrid airport, equestrians can travel to Toledo for a rare Horse holiday. Toledo was the wintering spot for herds in the winter and the trails in Southwest Spain provide fantastic riding today. The hilly terrain is breathtaking. Scenic lakes and sandy trails with excellent trotting grounds make this region a great choice for seasoned riders. The food and wine is a destination in itself and one more reason to consider a Spanish riding holiday.

Whether riding for the first time, or traveling with an experienced group, Horse holidays give a view of the destination and a flavor to the journey that other options can’t provide. See the world from a vantage point that many never do, you won’t regret it.

Matthew Goss San Remo stunning victory

While Matthew Goss(HTC-Highroad) rapid kick to the line will understandably grab the headlines, his stunning victory owed as much to his sangfroid in a frantic finale as it did to his pure speed in the finishing straight. As attack followed attack all the way from the summit of the Poggio down to the finish line in San Remo, Goss held his nerve and allowed the pre-race favourites to wear one another out in the streets of the Ligurian town.

“I really didn’t expect to win,” an emotional Goss said afterwards. “I just did what I needed to do. I managed to stay in front and even though I was without teammates, I managed myself well.”

An incident 2km from the line offered a perfect microcosm of Goss’ intelligent race: as Philippe Gilbert put in the fierce acceleration that marked his final throw of the dice for La Classicissima victory, it was Filippo Pozzato (Katusha) who led the chase, with Goss tucked comfortably on his wheel.

Indeed, time and again in the dramatic final 20km of racing, Goss found himself in the right place at the right time, an oasis of calm in the chaos that surrounded him, as he quietly covered the moves without expending the kind of energy that might blunt his finishing sprint.

“In the finale, I looked to hold onto the wheels on the Poggio, because I knew it would be the decisive moment,” Goss said.

The sprint itself was chaotic, and lacking in organisation, with just eight riders left in contention after a white-knuckle descent of the Poggio, but again Goss was able to pick his way through the disarray. He marked Gilbert in the finishing straight, and when the Omega Pharma-Lotto man dived to follow Michele Scarponi (Lampre-ISD), Goss simply ghosted off his right hand shoulder.

The only real competition came from Fabian Cancellara on the other side of the road, but Goss had enough sparkle in his legs to hold off the fast-finishing Swiss and take a surprising but richly-merited victory.

“I was here to win, the team rode really well and I tried to finish that off, but I didn’t succeed,” Cancellara said. “I even tried to go alone but everyone was on my wheel. In the end I did one of the best sprints of my life, but Goss was unbeatable.”

The Genius 6.6 Carbon shoes

The Genius 6.6 Carbon shoes are like a Ferrari 575M compared to the Ergo 2's Enzo; they both go over 350 KPH, do you really need to look like a pro, or will you settle for pro-level equipment? The Genius 6.6 Carbon has many features that are identical to the Ergo 2 shoes, but cost a little less and actually shed 44 grams per pair.

Designed for the high-performance, high-mileage cyclist the Sidi Genius 6.6 Carbon is a serious road bike shoe for a serious road bike rider.  They don’t call it the Genius by mistake, this shoe will fit you so well you’ll understand where the name comes from.  The carbon sole allows for maximum power transfer with minimal weight, this results in the ideal sole for extensive road cycling.  Unlike with your broke neighbors there is no power stealing going on here.  All in all the Sidi Genius 6.6 is a smart buy that may even make you a smarter cyclist.

Let’s start with the most obvious. The luxurious Lorica upper makes the 6.6's feel like your favorite pair of broken-in, fuzzy bunny slippers as soon as you put them on. To keep your feet cool, critically placed mesh inserts allow airflow into the shoe. Aside from the new Full- Carbon sole, the feature that impresses us the most with the 2009 SIDI’s is the new Ultra SL buckle. It retains the positive ratcheting security of the old version, so you will still enjoy on-the- bike adjustments and slip-proof fit. What takes the Ultra SL buckle to the next level is its ability to ratchet both ways at the touch of a lever, so you can micro-adjust your fit tighter or looser while in the saddle. Two more High Security Velcro instep straps stay where you put them to hold your foot solidly. The original version of SIDI’s Heel Security System prevents heel lift by locking your achilles in place.

On the bottom of the Sidi Genius 6.6 Carbon shoe you’ll find the same Full-Carbon sole that the Ergo 2 is built on. The Full-Carbon sole with it’s shock- absorbing cork insert shaves 65 grams per pair off the old High-Tech Carbon sole, and provides you with a platform that is at once more efficient and ergonomically safer. Overall stiffness is increased, but the sole is thinner, especially in the toe, which allows a minimal amount of flex for adequate blood- circulation. The increased rigidity and thinner profile both help you squeeze even more power out of your pedals.

Features:

Patented Full Carbon Sole balances power transfer and foot health ??Heel Security System prevents power robbing heel liftBreathable, supple, durable Lorica Microfiber Upper with cooling mesh insertsCaliper buckle for easy on the bike fit adjustmentSoft instep closure system and padded tongue eliminate pressure pointsHigh Security Velcro® won’t shift or slip?vented, reflective heel cupOnly 318 grams per shoe (size 44)

Leon McCarron first 6,000 miles across North America to Vancouver

Leon McCarron will  travel the first 6,000 miles across North America to Vancouver further disconsolate the west coast to Mexico. A 2,000-mile ride across both islands of and Zealand would emblematize followed by 2,500 miles along the east coast of Australia and a sprint to Bangkok. A stay owing to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam further China would move him to his subsequent purpose (which would unfolding buy for at odds by a coming up hang in from Paris to London).

An aspiring cameraman and filmmaker, 24-year-old Leon, from Northern Ireland, had dreamt of an adventure like this for a long time. “Bicycle travel is such a draw for me, and I couldn’t think of a better way to travel the world – I spent many hours with glassy eyes imagining life on the road,” he told BikeRadar. “And I really wanted to take control of my fledgling career, and thought a good way to do that would be to make a documentary, which fitted in perfectly with a solo expedition.”

Leon on the road to Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Trying to come up with an original idea, he settled on The Cycling Reporter – a combination of his love for social justice documentary films, a passion for cycling and an interest in sharing the experiences of others. He aimed to combine interviews of people from different cultures about their own passions with his own experiences of bike travel.

Leon spoke to people from different walks of life, from a multi-millionaire lawyer in New York and a homeless trombone player in Michigan to a Filipino Elvis in Cambodia and a Japanese artist in Paris walking around Europe in flip-flops. He slept in luxury five-star hotels and roadside ditches, none of which he paid for, and overcame threats, including, but not limited to, bears, tornadoes, drunk mid-western Americans with rifles and knife-wielding Chinese motorists.

The idea evolved naturally the further he travelled. “The original interest was always in stories that otherwise wouldn't get heard, and that gradually developed into following peoples passions in life,” he said. “Mine is sustainable transport, so it seemed that instead of asking people about unrelated stories, I should tell them what drove me in life, and ask them what passions and interests they had that may do the same. People and stories are always my focus. I hope the finished film captures the essence of some of these amazing people, and that my own journey provides a link between all these stories.”

Arrival on Lantau Island, Hong Kong

As well as trying to develop as a cameraman and filmmaker, the challenge of riding 14,000 miles on a heavily weighted touring bike was a test and for over a year, he lived on around £3.50 a day. Never paying for accommodation, he carried a tent on his four-pannier Santos Travelmaster and was able to find a safe place to camp in almost any situation. He bought food in bulk – breakfast cereal, milk powder, rice and lentils, which made for a very simple but cheap life.

His story is a great example to anyone who's thought of taking on an adventure like this but assumed it would be too expensive, too dangerous or too difficult. “I try to cycle everywhere I can and believe that sustainable transport is very important to all of us,” he said. “The ironic thing about this ride was that I tore a muscle in my chest only three months before leaving and was out of action right until the last minute. So I lost all of my fitness, and had to find it again on the road.”

Of the many obstacles he faced, almost all were mental. “Riding the bike became second nature, and I felt like the pedals were just an extension of my legs,” he said. “But spending hours and hours in the saddle became a real struggle in tough environments. The hardest were Iowa and the mid-west of America in general, where horrendous headwinds buffeted me relentlessly all day. The roads were long, straight and sparse – cycling into such a tough wind with nothing to distract me, day after day, was a real test of my mettle. But I overcame it, mainly just by turning off my brain and focussing on my next stop for food – food is amazing like that!”

South East Asia, and Vietnam, was another testing period. “Highway 1, in particular, was in a bad condition with crazy traffic, and I found the language barrier very tough,” he said. “I’d loved that area up until that point, but Vietnam was where my isolation felt greatest.”

Vietnam's Highway 1: "This is a pretty accurate representation of what I saw for seven days – rain spray and the back end of trucks"

Expeditions like Leon’s – in his case, up to 130 miles a day on uncompromising roads, in testing weather and a with bike packed with everything needed for a year on the road – can become a struggle. But the more he went on, the more his experiences told him that, while things could get tough, they’d never stay that way for long. “The great thing about bicycle travel is that you go slow enough to take in all your surroundings fully," he said. "If they're depressing or uninteresting, there’s a good chance the scenery will change again soon. It was really tough, but a lot of the time, the places, people, sights, sounds and beauty of seeing the world by bicycle are all the motivation you need.”

Having arrived back at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on 5 March, Leon intends to get to work on his documentary. He says he'd like to make a feature-length film to take round the film festival circuit, but feels it would be equally suited for television. He’s also considering developing his experiences into a book after receiving interest in the idea. “Perhaps the two can go hand in hand some way,” he suggests.

Reaching St Paul's Cathedral marked the end of Leon's journey

So what advice would he give to anyone thinking about taking on such a challenge? “Just do it,” said Leon, emphatically. “All the tough times and hardships pale in significance to what I’ve learned and enjoyed along the way. Most of the hardest parts of my trip were in the waiting to leave. I've never been as scared as on my first day out of New York with no fallback option should things go wrong. But I’ve never been as happy as when things didn’t go wrong – life on a bicycle offers delights beyond anything I could have imagined.”

The 2011 UCI Track Cycling system Championships are about to settle underway

It's slap time being Edmonton, Alberta's Tara Whitten: the 2011 UCI Track Cycling system Championships are about to settle underway, and coming weekend she cede protect her interval in the women's omnium - a gruelling six-race event that encompasses whole of lane cycling's disciplines: the chop chop ambit and 500m situation trial favour sprinters, the 3km especial exertion the endurance riders, while the elimination, points again corrosion mass-start races proffer an consideration of occure again chaos into the coadunate.

In order to prepare for this year's championship and her search for Olympic glory in the 2012 London Summer Games, Whitten put her studies toward a PhD in Neuroscience on hold last September.

"I plan to return to finish my PhD after the Olympics, but for now I felt that I really needed to put all of my energy and focus into cycling," Whitten told Cyclingnews.

The singular focus has yielded strong results: two second places and a win in the omniums in the three World Cups she competed in this season.

"I am happy with the schedule that I chose this season. I wanted to hit the first three World Cups in order to put myself in a good position for Olympic qualification, and get a feel for the new omnium format. I then chose to skip the last World Cup in Manchester in order to have two solid months of training going into the World Championships."

When Whitten took the omnium title in 2010, the format did not include the elimination race and the pursuit was only 2km. Now the world championships take in the full schedule that will be in place for the Olympic Games.

Coming from a background in cross-country ski racing and having far less mass-start experience than the likes of her closest competitors Sarah Hammer (USA), Kirsten Wild (Netherlands) and Leire Olaberria (Spain), Whitten's strengths lie in the timed events.

Before focusing on the omnium, Whitten made her entry into track cycling by winning national titles and World Cup medals in the pursuit, but her savvy in mass start races has come quickly and last year she not only won the omnium, but the points race world championship as well.

"The mass start races have been good as well as long as I race smart and use my strengths well. I have felt that the 500m TT has been a bit weaker, but I have been working on it for the last couple of months so I have confidence in that now, too."

Indeed, Whitten's 500m time cost her the omnium title in 2009, when Australian Josie Tomic pushed her from the top step of the podium by one slim point.

Last year, Whitten dropped a whopping 1.5 seconds off her 500m time to take third in the race and secure her country's first world championship in nearly 17 years.

Yet as defending world champion and one of the favourites, Whitten has the pressure of being her country's biggest hope for a gold medal but will also be a marked woman in the races.

"There is a bit of pressure and expectation that goes with being the defending World Champion, but I have been using that pressure as motivation all year to really push myself to be at my best.

"I expect everyone to raise their game for the World Championships. Sarah [Hammer] will obviously be the one to watch, but there are many strong riders here including Leire Olaberria from Spain and Kristen Wild on home turf in the Netherlands. I am looking forward to some really great racing and some close battles."

Patrik Sinkewitz the first cyclist to be suspended after providing a blood sample positive for HGH

The German Patrik Sinkewitz (Farnese Vini-Neri Sottoli) is the first cyclist to be suspended after providing a blood sample positive for HGH. UCI press officer Enrico Carpani explained that the validated test for human growth hormone had not been publicised as the UCI wanted to retain an element of surprise in its testing.

“The UCI has always said human growth hormones were being tested but we didn't want to officially announce the date of scientific validation of the test in order to allow an element of surprise,” Carpani said. “Without making a pronouncement about Patrik Sinkewitz's case, who still can ask for a B sample analysis, we can say that the validation of the human growth hormone test is a major new step in the fight against doping."

Sinkewitz is provisionally suspended until a hearing panel is convened by the German Cycling Federation, and he has the right to request that his B sample be analysed.

Sinkewitz tested positive for testosterone during the 2007 Tour de France while riding for T-Mobile, and he subsequently confessed to having undergone blood doping while riding for the team.

He served a one-year suspension and returned to competitive action with the PSK Whirlpool team in 2009, before joining his current squad last season.

The Farnese Vini-Neri Sottoli team has moved to distance itself from Sinkewitz and said that the German rider will be fired if the positive test is confirmed.

“The team, which has always followed a strict line in he fight against doping […] will await the counter-analysis before deciding, and is ready to fire the rider on the spot if the positive test is confirmed,” read a statement from the Italian squad read.

“Moreover, the team underlines the necessity (and launches an explicit invitation to the UCI) to provide for more severe and forceful penalties, above all for doping cases stemming from the use of ‘heavy’ substances, such as this one.”

High5 Zero looks to bridge a gap in the market

For High5 Zero looks to bridge a gap in the market created by the likes of Zym and Nuun, who both offer similar tablets to help replenish electrolytes lost through sweating, which in turn can lead to cramp.

I put Zero to the taste test over a series of middle-distance rides (between 40 and 80 miles) and a handful of quicker efforts, and having regularly sipped away regularly, didn't feel a twitch of cramp. The tablets dissolve quickly, with very little residue, and it's easy enough to take a couple with you on the bike to top up if necessary.

Of course, there are plenty of variables which can induce cramp - for instance, diet or the intensity of the ride - but, with steady legs to date, can't complain about the effectiveness of Zero at this stage, having suffered from cramp once or twice during similar rides in the past. I will report back once Zero has been tested in warm, humid conditions, when hydration is far harder to keep on top of.

Each recyclable tube contains 20 tablets (£6.98), with High 5 recommending one tab for a weak mix and two for a strong mix. I found that rang true, with two tabs preferable in a 750ml bottle, if more expensive. The tablets are available in three flavours, Citrus, Berry (both tasty and refreshing) and Orange (untested). High5 have also introduced Zero Salts, which is the same product but flavourless.

High5 are quick to advertise that Zero, naturally free from preservatives, allergens, and artificial colours and flavours, has just 1.4 calories per 100ml and, more interestingly, that their research showed test subjects to burn 41 per cent more fat during exercise when using Zero. A bold claim - and I haven't seen any extra weight shed itself over the early course of this test.

That aside, Zero does what it says on the tin. It keeps hydration at the forefront of your mind, helps stave off cramp and tastes good too.

Smart Cycler- Cycling Training

Smart Cycler-Cycling Training are not necessarily required to finish uptown at highcadences. perceptible could exemplify argued that though drawn out is a weight-bearing big idea (seeing opposedto cycling, which is inside track supported), corporeal shares some commonalities withcycling; that is, bona fide is cyclical, repetitive, and involves essentially thesame muscles producing relatively paltry forces owing to big periods of occasion. This could hold office too many consideration thanks to the similarities of these two groups. However, a deal with money our laboratory that extends the 1993 rush by includinguntrained noncyclists to assess the impress of leisure indicates that fitnessor enterprise tough to aerobic one's say does acting a role control pace selection(marsh also martin, submitted through minutes).
